What Are Link Folders? Keep Short Links Organized by Owner

A folder is the one place a link lives. Every short link sits in exactly one folder, or in no folder at all, the same way a file sits in one directory. Folders answer the question "whose link is this?" so a workspace shared by several clients, products or teams stays readable as it grows.

This guide covers what folders do, when a folder is the right grouping and when a tag or campaign fits better, and a simple structure that still makes sense at a thousand links.

What a folder does

Folders are the top level of your link library. Each one has a name, a colour and an optional description. Opening a folder on the Links page shows only the links inside it, so an account manager can work in their client folder without scrolling past everyone else’s links.

  • One home per link. A link belongs to one folder at a time, which keeps ownership unambiguous. Move it and it leaves the old folder.
  • Filter the links list. Pick a folder on the Links page to see only its links, and share that filtered view by URL.
  • Move links in bulk. Select several links and move them to another folder in one step when a project changes hands.
  • See the count at a glance. The Folders page shows how many links each folder holds, so empty or bloated folders stand out.

Folders, tags and campaigns: which one to use

ReSlug offers three ways to group links. They are designed to be combined: a link can be in one folder, belong to one campaign and carry several tags at the same time.

When to use folders, tags or campaigns to group short links.
UseBest forGroups per link
FoldersOwnership: a client, a product, a brand or a teamExactly one
CampaignsA time-boxed push with shared UTMs and its own analyticsExactly one
TagsCross-cutting labels: channel, status, audience, formatUp to five
If you find yourself wanting a link in two folders, that is a sign the grouping is really a tag. Keep folders for ownership and use tags for everything that can apply to many links at once.

A folder structure that holds up

  1. Name folders after owners, not topics. acme-corp, mobile-app, events-team. Topics like social or launch change too often and overlap too much; those belong in tags or campaigns.
  2. Keep it flat. Folders do not nest, and that is deliberate. A short, flat list is scannable; if you need a second level, a tag inside the folder does the job.
  3. Use colour for the owner type. For example one colour for clients, another for internal products. The colour shows on every folder badge, so the links list reads at a glance.
  4. Write the description. One sentence on what belongs in the folder saves the next teammate from guessing. It is visible on the Folders page.
  5. Leave the rest unfiled. Links with no folder are fine for one-offs. Not every link needs a home; only the ones someone will look for later do.

How to create and use folders in ReSlug

  1. Open Folders in your workspace and click New folder. Give it a name, pick a colour and add a short description.
  2. Choose the folder in the Folder field when creating or editing a link. Links created from inside a folder view land in that folder automatically.
  3. When a project changes hands, select several links on the Links page and use the bulk move action to refile them into another folder.

The Free plan includes 3 folders per workspace and Pro raises that to 50. See the pricing page for the full comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Can a link be in more than one folder?

No. A link lives in exactly one folder, or in none. If you need a link to show up under several groupings, add tags to it instead; a link can carry up to five tags.

What happens to links when I delete a folder?

The links are kept and simply become unfiled. Deleting a folder never deletes or changes the links inside it, and their short URLs keep working.

Can folders be nested?

No, folders are a single flat list. Combine a folder with tags when you need a second level of organisation.

Do folders affect the short link or its analytics?

No. Folders are internal organisation only. They never appear in the short URL or the redirect, and analytics are tracked per link regardless of folder.
